Shared cavity
Square
A square is a ninety-degree friction between symbols that share a mode of action and not a style of element, not proof you chose the wrong life.

Geometry
A square is an angle of ninety degrees, one quarter of the circle. From the start of Aries that lands at the start of Cancer or the start of Capricorn. The signs in a square share modality: cardinal with cardinal, fixed with fixed, or mutable with mutable.
They do not share element. Each wants to act with a similar insistence and a different material, which is why the aspect feels like two rightful claims in one space.
Ninety degrees is a right angle, the corner of a room. Nothing in the geometry is evil. Traditional astrology classes the square as a hard or challenging aspect because the planets do not easily lend each other their methods.
Challenge is a teaching word. It is not a character reference.
Orbs and judgment
Orbs are conventions, not laws. Squares are commonly taught with an allowance of about six to eight degrees, sometimes wider for the luminaries, sometimes tighter in predictive work. A square of one degree and a square of seven are both called squares in loose speech and do not have the same volume. Read tighter aspects first if you are learning a chart you already have.
Do not sort squares into the bad column and trines into the good. A square can be the reason a skill exists. A person who has had to reconcile a job's demand with a body's limit may be more competent than a person whose talents never argued. The aspect does not make you special, and it does not make you broken.
A relationship metaphor
A load-bearing wall and a pipe want the same cavity. The building needs both. You do not get to call either of them a mistake without a plan for what replaces it, and you do not get to run them through each other and call the leak fate. The work is a redesign: reroute, reinforce, or decide which function moves.
In a household this is two nonnegotiables that share a Tuesday. In a psyche it is two virtues that have not admitted they compete, such as honesty and loyalty when the truth will cost a bond. The square names the competition. You still design the building.
At a glance
| Angle | Ninety degrees |
| Plain count | Three signs apart, as from Aries to Cancer |
| What the signs share | Modality, not element |
| Common teaching orb | Often about six to eight degrees, a convention, not a law |
| Not | Evidence of a wrong life, or a test the universe assigned |
Redesign the cavity
- 1Name two real demands that keep colliding in the same hour or the same relationship.
- 2Write what each protects, so you do not solve the tension by scorning one of them.
- 3Pick a redesign: a new time, a boundary, a support, or a smaller version of one demand.
- 4Try it for a week and judge it by friction reduced, not by whether the tension became pretty.
Questions
- Which two goods am I pretending do not compete?
- What would I have to build if I stopped calling this collision my personality?
- Where is the friction producing skill, and where is it only producing heat?
