A short corridor
Sextile
A sextile is a sixty-degree opening between symbols, a corridor that still requires someone to walk it.

Geometry
A sextile is an angle of sixty degrees, the distance from the start of Aries to the start of Gemini, or the same span anywhere on the wheel. Count two signs along and you are in the sextile neighborhood: Aries looks toward Gemini and toward Aquarius. The signs involved do not share element or modality. What traditional doctrine gives them is a kind of access, a way of seeing each other that is real and not effortless.
Sixty degrees is one sixth of the circle. The geometry is plain. The meaning is the part we add. Modern tropical astrology is a symbolic language, not astronomy and not destiny, and a tidy angle does not become an instruction just because it is tidy.
Orbs and judgment
Orbs are conventions, not laws. Sextiles are often taught with a smaller allowance than conjunctions and oppositions, sometimes around four to six degrees, because the aspect is considered lighter. Some traditions ignore wide sextiles entirely. If your chart's printout does not list a sextile, do not invent one to make the week feel promising.
Judgment in the old books tends to call the sextile harmonious, which should not be translated as lucky. A door can be harmonious and still be shut. The planets involved tell you the kind of door: Mercury and Jupiter may offer a corridor between study and speech, while Mars and Saturn may offer a corridor between heat and limit that you still have to build.
A relationship metaphor
A colleague sits two desks over and will help if you roll your chair across. They are not in your lap, and they are not across a closed building. The help is adjacent.
The help requires a small, visible effort and a request that respects the other person's work. People who wait to be rescued by a sextile wait a long time.
The metaphor also covers skill. A sextile between what you know and what a situation needs is an opening, like a language you can use at the next table if you bother to switch. Ignoring it is not a cosmic failure. It is a choice, sometimes a fair one, to spend your effort somewhere tighter.
At a glance
| Angle | Sixty degrees |
| Plain count | Two signs apart, one sign between them, as from Aries to Gemini |
| Common teaching orb | Often about four to six degrees, and narrower in stricter traditions |
| Also called | The hexagon's angle; a minor-major aspect in some teaching slang, though classed as major in traditional lists |
| Not | A delivery that arrives without a request |
Roll the chair across
- 1Name one resource, person, or skill that is available and slightly out of your current posture.
- 2Write the request or the ten-minute effort that would connect you to it.
- 3Do that effort once, without demanding a transformation.
- 4If nothing useful happens, thank the experiment and spend your next effort on a tighter problem.
Questions
- What opening have I called absent because it was not dramatic?
- Whom could I ask, if I were willing to be specific?
- Where am I waiting for ease to replace a small exertion?
