Cups
Three of Cups
Cups · 3
Three figures dance in a loose ring with cups lifted, fruit and vines around their feet, the joy a little unruly and nobody appointed to take notes. The ground is a garden, not a stage. Each person is both holding a cup and being held by the circle.

Upright, or the open face
Three of Cups is friendship in the plural: celebration, mutual aid, the relief of being more than a pair and less than a crowd you have to manage. You let people show up for you, and you show up without making the gathering a contest for who is closest to the center. Community includes gossip that stays kind and toasts that name something true. Joy multiplies when it is not audited for ranking.
Reversed, or the pressured face
Reversed, the circle excludes, turns cruel in private, or cancels itself because everyone is too busy to be delighted and a little foolish. You may over-give to secure your place, or withdraw because one awkward night convinced you the species of friendship is closed to you; a tangled group is a situation. It is not a verdict on your likability, and it is not cured by performing the life of the party.
Questions
- Who is actually in my circle, and who is only in the audience of my life?
- What celebration or practical support is overdue between us?
- Where does group talk stop being care and start being a sport?
A grounded example
On a flat bit of roof that someone generously calls a terrace, you and two friends pass an inexpensive bottle because a piece of paperwork finally came back with the right name on it. You do not deliver a speech about identity as a concept. You clink, complain about the wind, and stay long enough to feel ridiculous and glad in the same breath; the night is small. The plural is the point.
