Pentacles
Six of Pentacles
Pentacles · 6
A well-dressed figure holds a pair of scales in one hand and gives coins with the other to people who kneel, while the picture's power is visibly uneven. The scales say the scene wants to be about measure. The kneeling says measure is not the same thing as dignity, and the old image does not fully solve that problem.

Upright, or the open face
Six of Pentacles is the flow of resources and the ethics of the flow: giving, receiving, and the dignity of both. Look at power honestly — who holds the coins, who is asked to shrink in order to receive, and how to offer help that does not require a performance of smallness. Generosity includes fair pay, a tip, a loan with terms said aloud, time given without a ledger waved later. If you are the one in need, receiving is not the lesser moral role; it is half the circuit; a circuit that only runs one way is a drain.
Reversed, or the pressured face
Reversed, charity grows strings, or the flow stops in resentment, debt, and gifts you will not accept because accepting would prove you are not self-made. You may over-give to manage your image, or keep score in a friendship until the friendship becomes accounts payable; help that humiliates is not the only shape help can take. Blocked exchange and generosity with a hook are the strains.
Questions
- Is this exchange dignified for everyone in it, including the person who kneels in the old picture?
- What string am I attaching, or quietly accepting?
- Where is the scale unfair, and what correction is available without a speech?
A grounded example
A small tax refund arrives the same week a cousin is short on a utility bill. You send a portion with a note that says the money is a gift, not a loan, and you keep enough to cover your own ordinary week. You do not announce the gift, and you do not store it for later use in an argument; the scales stay boring. Fairness often looks like boring, which is why it gets so little folklore.
