Cups

Nine of Cups

Cups · 9

A satisfied figure sits before an arc of nine cups, arms loosely crossed, wearing the look of a private wish that has somewhere to sit down. The bench is simple. The cups are plentiful, and nobody is required to applaud the arrangement.

Upright, or the open face

Nine of Cups is a wish met at the scale of your own senses: pleasure, ease, a contentment that does not need a crowd to be real. You are allowed to enjoy what you have without immediately upgrading the desire or apologizing for a body that likes things. Gratitude here is specific and sensual, not a moral performance you post; share if you want to share. Do not turn a good hour into a debt.

Reversed, or the pressured face

Pressured, satisfaction tips into smugness, numbing indulgence, or a strange refusal to admit you got what you asked for because wanting is more familiar than having. Sometimes the wish arrives and feels oddly flat, which is information about the wish, not a failure of your joy equipment. Too much and an inability to receive are both ways of missing the table; you are not greedy for liking your life for an evening.

Questions

  • What wish has already come true that I have not let myself taste?
  • Where does pleasure become a way of not being here?
  • What would enough, for today only, actually include?

A grounded example

You take a small table at a diner on a Tuesday and order the plate you want, not the plate that would photograph as virtue. Nobody joins you, which was the plan and also, for a minute, a fright; you do not scroll. For twenty minutes the wish is hot food and a window. You leave a decent tip and decline to turn the evening into a personality called self-care.
