Major arcana

The Hermit

One of the twenty-two major arcana.

A cloaked figure stands on a snowy height, lantern raised, the light inside it a star rather than a floodlamp. A staff takes the next step's weight. The face tips slightly downward, as if the path were more interesting than any view from the summit.

Upright, or the open face

The Hermit is chosen solitude in service of a true question. You step back from noise not to become a rare person, but to hear what you actually think when the room is not voting. The lantern is meant, eventually, to be carried back; this is not a personality of permanent withdrawal; study, walk, keep your own counsel for a defined while. Return with something clearer than an opinion you borrowed in a crowd.

Reversed, or the pressured face

Turned inward too long, retreat becomes exile, or the lantern is refused because you will not be alone with yourself for an hour. You may isolate past the point of wisdom, or fill every silence so no insight can land. The hard face of this card is either a hiding place or a fear of any hiding place at all.

Questions

  • What question deserves a week without an audience?
  • Am I alone, or am I hiding?
  • What small light could I carry back to someone who asked?

A grounded example

You rent a plain room for six days, bring one difficult book, and check your phone at noon only. The first night is itchy with the ghost of other people's sentences. By the fifth morning you can say, in a paragraph, what you actually believe about the work you came to study. You go home and tell one friend that paragraph, not the entire mythology of your retreat.
