Four of Wands

Wands · 4

Four staves planted in the ground hold a garland of flowers, a temporary arch that is festive and not pretending to be a fortress. Figures lift their arms beneath it, with a bridge, a crowd, and a castle farther back. The structure could come down by evening; that is part of its charm.

Upright, or the open face

Four of Wands is a milestone worth a gathering: a move-in, a truce, a first public showing, a chosen family around a table that does not match. Joy here is communal and specific. You mark what has been built so the building does not pass through unmarked and leave everyone tired; celebration is not frivolous. It is how a group remembers that the work belonged to more than one nervous system.

Reversed, or the pressured face

Upside down, the party is postponed until it dies of politeness, or the harmony is performed while a real tension waits behind the garland. Sometimes the homecoming you wanted is delayed by logistics, money, or a person who will not meet you halfway. Forced festivity and a refused one are both ways of missing the actual milestone.

Questions

  • What is ready to be celebrated even if it is small and a little crooked?
  • Who is missing from the garland, and is that absence chosen?
  • Am I waiting to feel worthy of a gathering I could host on a weeknight?

A grounded example

You borrow a hall that still smells faintly of basketballs and string paper flowers for a dinner that is not a wedding, not a birthday, and not an apology; people bring their own chairs. Someone toasts the plain fact that you all got through a mean year without becoming strangers. The flowers droop before dessert. The room still counts, because you let it be a marker instead of a magazine.
