Crystal cabinet

Sunstone

A feldspar, often oligoclase or labradorite, glittering with oriented platelets of hematite or copper.

Natural sunstone is translucent peach, orange, red, green, or colorless, with a scatter of tiny metallic flashes inside, like copper dust caught in resin, though it is not resin. The flashes stay put in the stone and wink as you turn it. Goldstone glass is usually a uniform sparkling brown-orange, full of triangular copper crystals, and it looks more manufactured because it is.

What it actually is

Material identity
Name used hereSunstone
Mineral or materialA feldspar, often oligoclase or labradorite, glittering with oriented platelets of hematite or copper.
HardnessAbout Mohs 6 to 6.5.
How it formsThe feldspar crystallizes in igneous rocks, and the glitter comes from exsolved platelets of hematite or, in the Oregon material, native copper, aligned inside the crystal. Light hits the platelets; nothing in the stone is a stored ray of the Sun.

Trade names and mix-ups

Sunstone is a feldspar with glitter. Goldstone is man-made glass full of copper crystals, invented to look celestial and often sold as if it were the natural stone. Oregon sunstone is a labradorite with copper, a locality stone with a state-gem title, not a different metaphysical species; confusing any of these with the Viking sunstone of the sagas is a separate error: when scholars argue that Norse navigators used a sunstone, they are usually talking about clear Iceland spar calcite, which polarizes light, not about this glittery feldspar.

Care

Feldspar rules: avoid knocks, ultrasonics, steam, salt, and thermal shock. A damp cloth and a full dry are enough. Do not bake it on a sill to wake it up; heat can crack a feldspar and will not improve copper platelets. Goldstone glass, if you own it knowingly, is glass and can chip. Dust gently so you are not sanding glitter.

Provenance

Oregon sunstone comes from a specific American mining landscape, including fee-dig operations and more serious claims; Indian and Norwegian feldspar sunstones have their own quarries. None of that is a license to invent a Viking tool and sell it as this mineral; buy the feldspar under its own name, and if you want the glass, buy the glass as glass.

Symbolism

  • eat before the news
  • a morning glint
  • shared breakfast
  • glitter you can locate in a real mineral

Folklore, only where it exists

Feldspar sunstone has been cut as a glittering gem in several modern traditions, and Oregon's copper-bearing stones became a point of state pride in the twentieth century. The saga word sunstone, where it appears, belongs to a different scholarly argument about navigation and optical calcite. Mixing the two makes a better shop sign and a worse history. There is no ancient feldspar-sun cult this cabinet is willing to reconstruct. Contemporary lists assign joy, leadership, and a cleaned pessimism, which are moods, not mineral properties. The Wilde Altar puts the stone on a breakfast table in ordinary morning light, after the pan is hot and before the headline is open. Two people can use that cue, whatever genders they are: one cooks, one sets the table, neither pretends a feldspar is a sunrise they control.

Cautions

An original practice

The Breakfast Glint

  • A piece of sunstone
  • A breakfast table
  • The meal you are actually going to eat
  • Whatever device usually arrives at the table with the headlines
  1. 1Before you sit, set the sunstone beside the plate, not in the juice and not on a scorching windowsill.
  2. 2Put the device in another room, or in a drawer, until the meal is over. If you share the table, agree the rule in one sentence. It applies to guests of every gender and to you.
  3. 3Eat something real, even if it is small. Tilt the stone once in the window light if you want to see the glitter, then let it be.
  4. 4When the plate is done, move the stone to the windowsill only if the sill is cool and dry, or back to its box.
  5. 5Only then open the news, and only if you still want it.
Breakfast first, then the wide world. The glint is copper or iron, not a command. I can set a table without a prophecy.

Wash the plate, keep the stone dry, and do not rinse the feldspar in the sink among the knives.

A practical action. If the morning showed you an empty tin or a medicine you need to reorder, write it down after you eat, not instead of eating.

Substitutions

  • A piece of goldstone glass labeled as glass, used the same way and not renamed
  • A copper penny, where you still have one, set by the plate as a metal and not a feldspar

Beginner questions

  • Is goldstone a natural sunstone? No. Goldstone is glass with copper crystals. Sunstone is a feldspar with mineral platelets.
  • Did the Vikings navigate with this stone? The sunstone discussed in that hypothesis is generally Iceland spar, a clear calcite, not glittery feldspar. Do not merge the two because both words contain sun.
  • Can I put it in water to catch the morning sun and then drink it? No. No elixirs. Drink the juice, leave the feldspar on the table.
