Smoky quartz
Quartz, silicon dioxide, colored brown to black by aluminum in the crystal and natural or artificial irradiation.
Color runs from tea to clove to nearly black, often with a glassy transparency and the same crystal shape as clear quartz. The darkness can look gray-brown rather than the purple-black of amethyst or the jet-black of schorl. An even charcoal with no transparency may be glass or another species.
What it actually is
| Name used here | Smoky quartz |
| Mineral or material | Quartz, silicon dioxide, colored brown to black by aluminum in the crystal and natural or artificial irradiation. |
| Hardness | Mohs 7. |
| How it forms | Trace aluminum replaces a little silicon, and radiation, over geologic time or in a lab, knocks the structure into color centers that absorb light. Strong heat can bleach those centers back toward clarity, which is why a smoky crystal dislikes a careless oven. |
Trade names and mix-ups
Smoky topaz is a persistent false name: topaz is a different mineral, harder and otherwise unrelated, and the brown quartz in Victorian jewelry was often sold under that disguise. Cairngorm is a Scottish jewelry name for local smoky quartz, and morion is the very dark end of the same quartz. A lot of inexpensive smoky quartz was rock crystal sent to an irradiator, which is a treatment, not a locality.
Care
Rinse and dry if it is dusty; do not bake it, and do not leave it in hard sun on a hot surface if you care about the color. Irradiated jewelry sold through ordinary channels is generally considered stable to wear, but it is still not a water infusion. Keep it out of salt. A soft cloth handles fingerprints.
Provenance
Natural smoky quartz occurs worldwide, including classic Scottish and Alpine material, while irradiated quartz is an industrial product that should be sold as treated. Ask which one a large, oddly uniform crystal is, and do not pay Alpine prices for an undisclosed lab color.
Symbolism
- shade as rest
- a boundary you can see
- a lowered voice
- keeping your own counsel
Folklore, only where it exists
Brown quartz has been worn for a long time, and Scottish cairngorm brooches made it a Highland jewelry stone in the modern era, but it does not carry a thick ancient magical literature comparable to amethyst or lapis. Lapidaries lumped dark stones together and assigned gravity or melancholy to them with more confidence than evidence. The current grounding and transmutation language is newer shop talk, and it often arrives glued to irradiated material. The Wilde Altar uses smoky quartz beside a visible boundary, not as a machine that composts bad feelings. Salt, in the practice below, is a ring you can see on a dish. It is not a scientific cleanser, it does not absorb spirits, and it must not become a storage bin for this stone or any softer one.
Cautions
An original practice
The Salt Line
- A piece of smoky quartz
- A small dry dish that can be washed
- A spoon of ordinary table salt
- A strip of paper and a pen
- 1Write one boundary in a single sentence: emails stop at nine, the spare room door stays shut, your name is used as you asked. Lay the paper in front of the dish, not under the salt.
- 2Pour the salt in a ring inside the dish only. Do not bury the quartz. Set the stone beside the dish, touching neither salt nor paper.
- 3Read the sentence once. If it affects a person you live with, a partner of any gender or a roommate, you still have to say it to them. The dish is not the conversation.
- 4Leave the arrangement overnight where it will not be mistaken for food and where pets will not lick the salt.
- 5In the morning, tip the salt into the trash, wash the dish, and keep the paper only if the sentence is still true. Salt left out clumps, creeps, and can scratch any softer stone it later meets.
This ring is a mark, not a magic drain. The stone stays out of the salt. I will say the boundary with my own mouth.
Dry the dish and put the quartz back on its cloth. Do not reuse the salt on food, and do not store any stone in the salt cellar.
A practical action. Tell the person involved, set the email hours on the device itself, or shut the door you named, today.
Substitutions
- A ring drawn on paper in pencil, if you do not want salt in the house
- A brown glass bottle shard, tumbled smooth and kept as glass, in place of the quartz
Beginner questions
- Is smoky quartz the same as topaz? No. Smoky topaz is a trade lie or a leftover mistake. Topaz is another mineral.
- Is salt a cleanser for crystals? No. A salt line can be a symbol you choose. It is not physics, and storing stones in salt can scratch soft ones and corrode metal settings.
- Is irradiated quartz dangerous to keep? Material sold for jewelry has generally sat long enough that the treatment is not a household radiation story. It is still not an elixir, and the seller should still admit the treatment.
