Name and route
Mercury
Mercury is the symbol of messages, routes, and the mind's traffic, not a score of intelligence and not a retrograde personality.

What it asks you to notice
Mercury asks how a thing gets named, carried, sold, joked, or understood. It is the route between two rooms, the clause in a contract, the nervous system of errands, the moment you realize you have been using the wrong word. In a life it shows up as translation: between specialists, between siblings, between what you meant and what landed.
Watch the hands as well as the talk. Mercury is traditionally a planet of merchants, scribes, and thieves, which is a way of saying that messages move value, and that not every clever move is a kind one. Skill in speech is not the same as truth.
Name and history
The Roman Mercurius took on the duties of Greek Hermes, the herald who crosses boundaries, guides travelers, and, in the Homeric Hymn, steals Apollo's cattle before he invents the lyre. The hymn is funny and morally mixed on purpose. Hermes is not a brand of 'communication skills.' He is a god of thresholds, including the shady ones.
Traditional astrology gives Mercury the domiciles of Gemini and Virgo, and lets it change character with the company it keeps. That flexibility is the teaching. A mercurial symbol beside Saturn is not the same gesture as a mercurial symbol beside Venus. Context is the whole art.
In the sky
Mercury is the innermost planet, with an orbital period of about eighty-eight Earth days. From the ground it never strays far from the Sun's glare, so it is famous among astronomers as a twilight object rather than a midnight one. Its apparent retrograde motion, several times a year, is a line-of-sight effect explained in the retrograde essay.
Nothing in that orbit ranks a person's intelligence or curses a week of email. If you want the cultural panic and the astronomy set side by side, read that essay. This page will not tell you whether Mercury is retrograde today.
Over-identification
Over-identification sounds like 'I am bad at Mercury' when what is true is that you are tired, unpracticed, or afraid of a particular conversation. It also sounds like pride in speed, as if the quickest reader in the room were the wisest. Wit is a tool. Used as a rank, it isolates you.
Another trap is the identity 'I am a Mercury retrograde person,' worn all year. Apparent motion is a recurring geometry, not a tribe. You may still choose double-checking as a habit. The habit does not need a mascot.

Send the sentence that says the thing
- 1Draft the message you have been decorating, then strip it to the request, the fact, and the deadline.
- 2Read it as if you were the recipient on a loud train.
- 3Remove one joke or apology that hides the point, unless the joke is the actual kindness.
- 4Send it, or decide not to send it and write down why, in words as plain as the draft.
Questions
- What am I translating, and what am I smuggling?
- Where does speed pass for understanding in my work?
- Which conversation needs a route, not another opinion?
